Improving your Fertility before Seeing the Fertility Specialist

Infertility treatment options castle rockCertain fertility issues are easy to pinpoint and treat while others are more evasive. Before you choose to pursue fertility treatments, there are specific ways you can boost your fertility without medical help. Before scheduling a fertility specialist visit, consider how the following suggestions might help increase your fertility.

Eat healthy foods

Many doctors believe that diet is one of the main factors responsible for ovulatory dysfunction. Ovulatory dysfunction is a general term that includes a variety of problems that can be associated with ovulation. The Harvard School of Public Health identified several “fertility foods” that can help boost your odds of conception.

  1. Monosaturated fats: Peanut oil, olive oil, sesame oil, safflower oil, and canola are all sources of monosaturated fats. Not only are they beneficial to fertility, but they can diminish your risk of cardiovascular disease. Steer clear of trans fats, like those typically found in baked goods and treats.
  2. Increase vegetable protein and decrease animal protein. High quantities of vegetable protein are found in soy, peas, spinach, kale, and broccoli.
  3. Eat high fiber, low glycemic foods: these include vegetables, certain fruits, and grains. Also, cut back on a number of foods you eat with refined sugars and carbohydrates.
  4. Consume high-fat dairy products: these include cheese and whole milk.

Maintain a healthy weight

Having a low or high BMI (Body Mass Index) may inhibit your ability to conceive. Extra weight can hinder pregnancy even if you are ovulating normally. Studies show that for every 1 point in BMI above 30, chances of conceiving are 4% less. If you have a BMI of 35 or over, your chances of conceiving diminish by 43%.  Thinness can also be a hindrance in getting pregnant if you are not able to maintain a consistent menstrual cycle.

Reduce stress

The link between stress and infertility continues to grow. Studies show that women who enrolled in therapy to reduce stress saw in increase in their ability to conceive. Women involved in fertility treatments also experienced more success when participating in stress reduction therapy. Some ideas for feeling less stressed include yoga, regular massages, gardening, talking with a good friend, or writing in a journal.
