Tubal Reversal: Is it Really Possible?
- Posted on: Jun 18 2013
You may have heard that tubal reversal is possible and often successful, but is it really?
About 50% of women who have had their tubes tied regret it at some point farther down the road and wonder if they can have the tubal ligation reversed in order to get pregnant. These woman may opt to have a procedure called a tubal reversal or tubal ligation reversal.
But is tubal reversal a realistic option for getting pregnant?
About Tubal Reversal
Let’s begin with a brief explanation of what a tubal ligation is and how it works.
A tubal ligation is surgery that either blocks or closes a woman’s fallopian tubes. This prevents eggs from entering the uterus after they are released from the ovaries, so sperm are unable to reach them for fertilization, and the woman cannot get pregnant. You may have heard this called “tubal sterilization” or simply “getting your tubes tied.”
Tubal reversal is done by “untying”, or reconnecting a woman’s fallopian tubes so that her eggs can once again travel through them to the uterus, to become fertilized by sperm.
So, if you had a tubal ligation and have tubal reversal done, is there at least a decent chance you can get pregnant?
Success rates of conceiving following tubal reversal are contingent on several factors, but generally speaking, pregnancy success rates range from 40% all the way up to 85%.
What Affects Success of Tubal Reversal?
Your odds of success with a tubal reversal hinge on a variety of factors. Here are some of the things that can affect the success or failure of tubal reversal procedure:
- Your age (the older you are the lower chance of success) and egg quality
- The amount of scar tissue you have in the pelvic area
- Prior history of pelvic infections
- The type of tubal ligation procedure that was done
- Whether or not your fallopian tubes still function and the ends of the tube are normal
- The length of your fallopian tubes after the reversal procedure
- Your male partner’s sperm count and fertility
One of the most important things that can affect your success with tubal reversal is the skill of the fertility doctor in Colorado who performs the procedure. To make sure that you get the best possible chance of a successful tubal reversal and subsequent pregnancy, see a fertility specialist who has the expertise and experience needed to tip the scales in your favor.
