8 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IVF BEFORE DONATING EGGS

1: Definitions

There are a few definitions regarding in vitro fertilization (IVF) that you need to understand. These include:

IVF is joining an egg and sperm together in a laboratory dish.IVF Denver CO
IVF means “outside the body.”
For egg donors, IVF is a means of providing a couple or person with their own eggs in order to help them to have a child.
IVF means the same thing for the couple or recipients: they will be getting a new baby.
2: Many Opinions Exist

One woman, who was a potential egg donor at the time, wanted to talk to a few friends over drinks about considering egg donation. Being a social scientist, she thought it would be a good idea to study the different behaviors during her quest of sharing information about herself.

She found that people responded differently. Some found it to be a really nice thing to do, and some showed concerns about her own fertility, although there were only a few. This donor had a sarcastic remark about her trying to control fate.

Even though this particular woman had some reactions, no one asked her how it would affect her spouse, family, or friends. Only a few asked how it works. Overall, she came to the conclusion that most people really didn’t know what to say or how to feel about egg donation, and most haven’t heard much about it since it is fairly new procedure.

3: After Surgery Monitoring

Denver IVFYou should always know your rights when considering some type of medical procedure, and egg donation is no exception. You must check your insurance to make sure you are covered at least for a week after surgery. Some clinics will monitor egg donors after the procedure, but other clinics will send the donor home after the eggs are retrieved and tell her to call if anything goes wrong. Some egg donor insurances will only cover for 90 days. Also, check to see what hormones are covered under the insurance. Some are not FDA approved for IVF.

4: Fertility and 15 Eggs

Fifteen oocytes (eggs) is the most favorable number for the oocyte recipient’s chances of a live birth.

5: Follicles Produced

Under normal hormonal stimulation, women usually produce around 5 to 19 follicles an ovary. Additionally, only one to two eggs will mature for the month.Best Fertility Center

6: Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome

With egg donation, make sure your Colorado fertility doctor prescribes enough medicine to stimulate the eggs, but not so much to increase risking ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). This syndrome occurs as a result of complications with fertility medication, particularly those of hyperstimulation. Most cases of OHSS are mild, but a small proportion of these are severe.

7: Quality of Eggs and Embryos

Once the egg(s) are retrieved, each egg and embryo will be graded for quality. The fertility specialist assesses the embryo for quality determination, morphological appearance, and embryo gene expression. This helps determine embryo quality and cell division over time.

8: Embryo Implanted after 5 Days

In the past, an embryologist would place embryos or blastocyst (which is the name of an embryo on day 5) in the uterus on day 3. This was due to not knowing if it would live longer than that. Now, the embryos live 5 or 6 days, so the embryologist can now select a blastocyst with high probability for implantation.
